If you already enjoy foundation piecing, I have included some delightful paper piecing mug rug patterns. These make quick projects for improving your FPP skills.

What is a Mug Rug

Mug rugs are mini quilts designed to hold a mug and a snack. Mug rugs add a decorative touch to your coffee or teatime. They are also ideal for protecting surfaces from heat and moisture. Mug rug paper piecing patterns are fun and quick to make. This makes them ideal for both beginners and advanced quilters alike.

What is Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP)?

Foundation paper piecing (FPP) is a quilting technique that uses a printed paper template. This template serves as the foundation for sewing fabric pieces together. The template outlines the design of the quilt block, and you sew the fabric directly onto the paper. This method allows for precise and accurate piecing, even with small fabric pieces. Once the block is complete, you simply remove the paper.

The key to successful foundation paper piecing is to remember that the printed side of the template shows the reverse of the final design. For example, if a tree appears on the left side of the template, it will be on the right side in the finished block. By following a few straightforward steps, you can create beautiful quilt blocks with confidence.

Step-by-Step Guide to Foundation Paper Piecing

Essential Supplies for FPP

To successfully dive into Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP), having the right supplies is essential. Below is a list of the basic sewing supplies and materials you will need to get started:

  • Foundation paper (regular printing paper or freezer paper)

  • Paper Piecing Pattern

  • Fabric pieces (larger than the finished size)

  • Sewing machine (or hand sewing supplies)

  • Thread

  • Fabric Scissors or rotary cutter

  • Cutting mat

  • Iron and ironing board

  • Ruler

  • Seam ripper (let's hope you don't need this)

  • Light source (lightboard, window, or flashlight) (beneficial but not essential)

Foundation Paper Piecing: A Beginner's Guide

Foundation paper piecing (FPP) is a sewing technique that allows for precise piecing of quilt blocks using a paper foundation as a guide. This method is perfect for intricate designs and small pieces, ensuring accuracy and ease throughout the process.

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to get you started:

  • Step 1: Set Your Stitch Length

Adjust your sewing machine to a shorter stitch length for easier paper removal.

  • Step 2: Print the Foundation

Print or copy the foundation templates on regular printer paper or freezer paper. Remember, the printed side is the reverse of the finished block.

  • Step 3: Position Your Fabric

Place the A1 fabric piece wrong-side down on the non-printed side of the paper. Ensure it fully covers the designated area with about 1 inch or more of overhang.

  • Step 4: Pin

Secure the piece of fabric in place using a pin.

  • Step 5: Position Your Next Piece of Fabric

Place the A2 fabric piece with the right side facing the right side of A1. Ensure it will completely cover A2 on your paper pattern when unfolded.

  • Step 6: Pin

Now pin both pieces of fabric to the paper pattern.

  • Step 7: Sew the First Seam

Flip the paper over to the printed side. Sew along the line between A1 and A2. Begin and end your stitches beyond the line.

  • Step 8: Trim Excess Fabric

Fold the paper back on the sewing line. Trim the excess fabric from A1 leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance. To do this use a rotary cutter, ruler, and cutting mat.

  • Step 7: Press the Fabric

Flip the block over and press the fabric open with a hot, dry iron. Be careful not to distort the block.

  • Step 8: Trim Excess Fabric

Flip the block over and fold the paper on the next line. Trim off the excess fabric from A2 leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

  • Step 9: Add Next Piece of Fabric

Place the A3 fabric piece with the right side facing the right side of A2. Ensure it will completely cover A3 on your paper pattern when unfolded.

  • Step 10: Sew the Seam

Flip the paper over to the printed side. Sew along the line to create the seam. Begin and end your stitches beyond the line.

  • Step 11: Repeat

Repeat steps 9-10 following along with the numbered pieces. Next would be A4 and so on.

  • Step 8: Remove the Paper

Once you have sewn all the fabric pieces to your template, your block is complete. Gently tear away the paper foundation from the back, taking care not to pull on the seams. Be careful removing any bits of paper caught in the stitches.

  • Step 9: Final Press

Give your block a final press with an iron to ensure everything lies flat and neat.
